Some aspects of Kaluza-Klein theory

Five dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory is described from the historical viewpoint. This theory is then generalised firstly for a non-Abelian group and then for the specific group SU(2) x U(1). The calculation of the scalar curvature of the extended manifold is performed using Cartan's structure equations. The role of Killing vectors is heavily emphasized in this treatment.
