The study of Algelciras unit, iniciated with the seríes of Rinconcillo (Ruiz Cruz et al., 1987), is now completed. The mineralogical results of the Punta Tarifa series are analyzed, and are compared with the former studies, and, also conclusions relative to the Algeciras unit are exposed. ... resence of chlorites of variable genesis. The differences between these series come from the different content in clay minerals, specially, smectite, palygorskite, kaolinite and chlorite. Differences are related with chemical characteristics of depositional and/or diagenetic environment and, also, with different alteration degree of detrític minerals.Este trabajo completa el estudio de la unidad de Algeciras, iniciado anteriormente (Ruiz Cruz et al., 1987), con el estudio de la serie tipo El Rinconcillo. Se analizan los resultados obtenidos en la serie tipo Punta Tarifa, se comparan con los anteriores y se exponen las conclusiones relativas a la unidad de Algeciras. La serie tipo Punta Tarifa se caracteriza por el porcentaje alto de interestratificados I-V, I-E, I.V-E, CI-I, ricos en láminas de ilita, Y la presencia bastante constante de cloritas con orígenes diversos. Las diferencias entre las series tipo estudiadas vienen dadas especialmente por el diferente contenido en determinados minerales, especialmente esmectitas, paligorskita, caolinita y clorita, que es debido fundamentalmente a diferencias en el medio químico durante el depósito y la diagénesis y, en cierta medida, al diferente grado de alteración de los minerales detríticos.
