Evaluation of the General Health Status of Fishermen in Marmara Region

Objective: Fishing has long been known as one of the most dangerous occupational groups. Fishermen are faced with long working hours, difficult weather conditions and a heavy workload, and this poses various health risks. In the collection of the data, a questionnaire containing questions about the sociodemographic, individual and health characteristics of the participants and the General Health Questionnaire used to determine the level of general psychopathology were used. Student-t test, Mann Whitney U test and chisquare test were used for statistical analysis. Results: Fishermen's smoking and alcohol use rates were found to be higher compared to the control group, but fishermen did not differ from the control group in ÖZET Amaç: Balıkçılık uzun zamandır en tehlikeli meslek gruplarından biri olarak bilinmektedir. Balıkçılar uzun çalışma saatleri, zorlu hava koşulları ve ağır iş yükü ile karşı karşıya kalmakta ve bu durum sağlık açısından çeşitli riskler oluşturmaktadır. Bununla birlikte balıkçılar bazı hastalıklara karşı koruyucu olduğu bilinen su ürünlerini normal popülasyona kıyasla yüksek miktarda tüketmektedir. Bu çalışmada, Marmara Bölgesi'ndeki balıkçıların genel sağlık durumlarının kontrol grubuyla karşılaştırılarak değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır.
