ATOM - PROBE ANALYSIS OF YBa2 Cu3 O7-x - SINGLE CRYSTALS

A b s t r a c t -Complementary atom-probe measurements h a v e been c a r r i e d o.ut t o c h a r a c t e r i z e components connected t o t h e l a y e r s t r u c t u r e o f t h e m a t e r i a l . The b u l k c o m p o s i t i o n a s d e t e r m i n e d from atom-probe s p e c t r a is g e n e r a l l y i n agreement w i t h t h e e x p e c t e d 1 : 2 : 3 phase. A d d i t i o n a l l y used f l u x media i n t h e growth p r o c e d u r e l i k e PbCl can b e found 2 embedded i n n e a r
more » ... mbedded i n n e a r s u r f a c e l a y e r s . 1 -INTRODUCTION S i n c e t h e d i s c o v e r y o f one o f t h e most t h o r o u g h l y i n v e s t i g a t e d h i g h t e m p e r a t u r e superconduct o r m a t e r i a l YBa2Cu307-x (O<x<l) /1/ it was r e a l i z e d t h a t it is remarkably e a s y t o p r e p a r e c e r a m i c s a m p l e s w i t h t r a n s i t i o n t e m p e r a t u r e s above 9 0 K. I n c o n t r a s t , it is much more d i f f ic u l t t o produce s i n g l e c r y s t a l s 121. N e v e r t h e l e s s , s i n g l e c r y s t a l s w i t h s u i t a b l e d i m e n s i o n s f o r t r a n s p o r t , m a g n e t i c and o p t i c a l measurements a r e o f b a s i c i n t e r e s t . The problems i n c r y s t a l growth o f YBa2Cu307-x a r e b a s e d on i t s l i m i t e d t h e r m a l and c h e m i c a c h a r a c t e r i z a t i o n o f t h e o b t a i n e d c r y s t a l s h a s been done by e l e c t r o n microprobe a n a l y s i s , X-ray d i f f r a c t i o n and by t r a n s p o r t measurements. P r e l i m i n a r y atom-probe f i e l d -i o n microscopie i n v e s t i g a t i o n s performed on h i g h t e m p e r a t u r e s u p e r c o n d u c t o r s were s u c c e s s f u l i n a p p l y i n g t h e t e c h n i q u e t o t h e s e new m a t e r i a l 14-71. To o b t a i n a d d i t i o n a l i n f o r m a t i o n a b o u t microcornposition and t o h e l p t o o p t i m i z e t h e p r e p a r a t i o n c o n d i t i o n s complementary atomp r o b e s t u d i e s have been c a r r i e d o u t .
