Pike a n n o u n c e d a p p o i n t m e n t s of the 1986 chairs of the Society's 11 c o m m i t t e e s . Below is a s u m m a r y of the goals and activities of six of the c o m m i t t e e s as defined by the c o m m i t t e e chair. As the Society c o n t i n u e s to e x p e r i e n c e a high level of g r o w t h in n u m b e r s of m e m b e r s and variety of int e r e s t s and needs, the C o m m i t t e e s play an i m p o r t a n t role in instituting n e w d i m e nsions in existing projects and recommending c h a n g e s in policies and p r o c e d u r e s to t h e M R S Council. M R S m e m b e r s are e n c o u raged to contact c o m m i t t e e chairs to offer advice, s u g g e s t i o n s a n d assistance with any of the areas described below. Awards C o m m i t t e e Chair: Elton N. Kaufmann. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Livermore, CA; telephone (475) 423-2640 As required by M R S By-Laws, the A w a r d s C o m m i t t e e is chaired by the i m m e d i a t e past president of the Society. T h e committee solicits n o m i n a t i o n s for the Von Hippel Award as well as n o m i n a t i o n s for the G r a d u a t e S t u d e n t A w a r d s conferred at both the Spring and Fall M e e t i n g s of the S o c i e t y . T h i s y e a r t h e c o m m i t t e e will c o n t i n u e to provide Council with n o m i n e e s and m o n i t o r the Council balloting for the Von Hippel A w a r d . It will p r o m o t e and review applications for the G r a d u a t e S t ud e n t A w a r d s p r o g r a m . T h e C o m m i t t e e will establish the m o n e t a r y a w a r d level for the G r a d u a t e S t u d e n t A w a r d w i n n e r s and F.W. Young, Jr. o v e r s e e preparation of t h e c o m m e m o r a t i v e plaques associated with each M R S a w a r d . In conjunction with the Long-Range Planning C o m m i t t e e , the A w a r d s C o m m i t t e e will e x p l o r e t h e n e e d for n e w a n d / o r modified a w a r d s and o t h e r forms of recognition appropriate for the Society. T h e C o r p o r a t e Participation C o m m i t t e e is the interface b e t w e e n M R S and its C o rp o r a t e Affiliates. T h e C o r p o r a t e Affiliates play a vital role in the Society by e n s u r i n g that the Society's technical p r o g r a m s are responsive to the i n t e r e s t s of the c o r p o r a t e materials research c o m m u n i t y . T h e C o mm i t t e e is responsible for keeping the C o rp o r a t e Affiliates a b r e a s t of the activities of t h e M R S , for seeking their advice on topics to be addressed at its m e e t i n g s , and for b r o a d e n i n g the base of s u p p o r t for the M R S and its activities in the c o r p o r a t e sector. M R S corporate participants n u m b e r m o r e t h a n 100 and the C o m m i t t e e plans to s t e p up activities to spread the a w a r e n e s s of the p r o g r a m and its benefits to the c o r p o r a t e world. T h e C o m m i t t e e has recently prepared an updated information sheet which outlines the n e w e s t C o r p o r a t e Affiliate benefits. T h e C o m m i t t e e will w o r k closely with the P r o g r a m C o m m i t t e e to e n s u r e that materials technology topics i m p o r t a n t to t h e C o r p o r a t e Affiliates are considered in p r o g r a m s of upcoming M R S meetings. External Affairs C o m m i t t e e T h e External Affairs C o m m i t t e e was established in 1985 to respond to the g r o wing i n v o l v e m e n t of the Society in materials science activities in i n d u s t r y , education and g o v e r n m e n t , and international liaisons with professional g r o u p s with similar interest. T h e complex scientific, societal and political aspects of materials research activities requires responsible advice and cooperation from a variety of organizations, including M R S . T h e goal of the Society is to foster interdisciplinary materials research. T ow a r d this end, t h e External Affairs C o mmittee will focus on the following areas in 1986: (1) international relations with M R S scientific o r g a n i z a t i o n s in Europe, Asia and e l s e w h e r e ; (2) i n t e r a c t i o n s with o t h e r societies serving specific aspects of materials science; (3) interaction with policy-making bodies for materials science, such as the N a t i o n a l A c a d e m y of Science and t h e National A c a d e m y of Engineering; (4) participation in various national and international studies involving materials science issues as they arise; and (5) solicitation of editorials for the MRS BULLETIN to reflect a broad r a n g e of views and opinions on timely materials issues as background for the m e m b e r s h i p .
