The article reveals some aspects of the emergence of Ukrainian songs associated with sociopolitical conditions in Ukraine in the XIX century. In the perception of contemporaries, the Ukrainian tone was combined with ideas about the Cossacks. A typical example of the Ukrainian melodies of that time can serve as a widely distributed and placed in printed collections a song of a lyrical character "The Cossack was riding behind the Danube" composed by the "Cossack-poet" S.
