ABSTRACT This article aims to show the results from an experience of substitution of reactives in fluoride and chlorine analysis, which are regularly done in a water treatment station in order to check the residual of these two elements in samples of drinking water. Based on the principles of Green Chemistry (the manipulation of chemical elements always should be done with the less toxic ones), it was tested the substitution of arsenite by sodium thiosulfate in fluoride analysis and the use of DPD3 without mercury chloride in chlorine analysis. In order to compare the results it was used the theory of "t Student test" and confidence interval. The tests showed that the substitution of reactives in both analysis causes slight changes in the results and therefore it is possible the use of less toxic substances to check fluoride and chlorine residual.
