Synopsis Existing literature on seasonal replacement in forcst tree − 1caves was reviewed from the vieWPoints of phenology , Ieaf biomass , Ieaf fal1 , 1eaf surv 産 vorship − curvcs a 皿d defoliation by ins ts. Many of the investigations which had focused on phenologica1 and leaf fall analyscs were found to be inadequate to obtain accurate inf{ ) mlation about the 】 ife span of ind孟 vidual leaves . Leaf longevity is cons 至 dered to be determ 三 ned by the balancing of the cost of leaf construction , Ieaf maintenance , and the benefit or photosynthetic gain from the leaves . Therofore, leaf longevity is one adaptivc strategy of plants to environmental conditions . Thc leaf survival strategy of pioneer spe − cies is characterized by leng term leaf− emergence and short leaf −10ngevity , whereas tree species which are membcrs of dimax forests show s 量 multan ◎ ous Icaf ℃ merge 皿 ce and leaf − fall . Lcaf longovity of forcst − understory species is usually 10ng . Leaf survival strategies are considered to have resulted from the evolutionary adaptive radiation Qf each species to various env 詮onments , a ompan 童 ed by the evolution of mo 叩 hoIogical f ヒatures such as shoot st 皿 cture .
