What does information technology change in the university libraries? It is tried to show, that the original functions of libraries and documentation centres, to collect, to classify, and to make information available, are constants in a changing world. Shared cataloguing, logistics in offering the different types of information, and information management are new Solutions for old problems. more » ... cal and wide area networks, äs well äs for instance robot like machines for stock management are very helpful for this classical tasks. There are three important aspects for libraries: their function äs archives, their economic, and theirsynoptic aspect. The aim ofthis paper is to remind the original idea of libraries in a time oftechnological changeover. Librarians, information scientists, and keepers ofthe archives have to realize the meaning ofthe so called electronic library. It's a fundamental decision for ourprofession to do this courageous Step forward.
