The participation of amateurs in the production of news has been widely observed as a growing phenomenon. This thesis investigates the significance of amateur photographs for the professional news media by examining when, how and why amateur photographs are sourced and published in the news. The thesis frames the research in terms of the practice of sourcing, focusing on the decisions and attitudes of news media workers towards amateur photographs.
