Purpose : Our aim was to evaluate the usefulness and limitations of ultrasound US examination following stenting for supraaortic artery stenosis. Methods : Twenty-four patients were examined ; had stenosis of the carotid artery bifurcation, had stenosis of the proximal portion of the vertebral artery, and had stenosis of the subclavian artery. US examinations were performed by B-mode and pulsed Doppler before and immediately after stenting, and every months thereafter. Digital subtraction

Results : For carotid artery stenting, we were able to evaluate morphological patency by B-mode of cases , and hemodynamics by pulsed Doppler in the stented portion. These data were confirmed by DSA. However, in the vertebral artery or subclavian artery, we were able to evaluate intraluminal morphology in the stented part in only a low proportion of cases vertebral artery , subclavian artery , and evaluated blood flow patency by measuring blood flow velocity and wave pattern in the distal portion of the stented artery. Conclusion : US examination is useful for less invasive evaluation of vascular patency after stenting for carotid and supraaortic artery stenosis. Reprint request Satoshi TAKASHIMA
