A Birge-Sponer extrapolation for the upper state of IF gives Dq(IF) = 1-98 or 2-87 + 0-04 eV, depending on whether the upper state dissociates to excited I and norm al F or vice versa. Available evidence favours the lower value for Do(IF) ( = 1-98 + 0-04 eV), i.e. upper state dis sociates to excited I and norm al F. By analogy, if we assume th e upper state of B rF dissociates to excited B r and norm al F , a Birge-Sponer extrapolation gives Do (BrF) = 2 16 + 0 02 eV.
