Current Issues and Future Perspective of Mathematical Literacy in the Knowledge-Based Society

The purpose of this research is to clarify the current issues of mathematical literacy and t〔) prQpose its future perspe 〔 ン tive . In this paper, we firstly look at the historical and social development of the corlception of literacy from the hunter . gatherer society through the agricultural society and the industrial society to the knowledge4 〕 ased or information society , Secondl } -we consider the asymmetrical relationship between the society and individuals , in terms of " mathema 亡

The point is that mathematics becomes implicit and invisible for the peop ] e , because it is embedded in teehnologica1 tools such as calculators and computerg . in the society , This situation can be best summarized by the following words : " an in − creasing matheniatization of our society is comp ! ernented by an increasing demathematization of its indiviClual nlcmbers ' 7 ( Keitel , 199712 ) . Because we are living in this mathematized societ 第 we should develop rnathematical literacy in order to encode and decode from the real world to the mathematical one , From this perspective, we discussed the fundamental prhlciple of an alternative curriculurn for mathernatical literacy . ln short , it means that mathematica1 亡 hinking including modeling and critical thillking is emphasized increasingly as well as mathematical contents
