Introduction Major Australian cultural institutions such as museums and libraries are demonstrating a growing desire to reach wider audiences via an expanded online presence. Such initiatives are tempered by the prohibitive cost of digitising existing collections which are currently archived using complex professional taxonomies. These social media are redefining the exchange of information and meaning between content-rich institutions and content-hungry, digitally literate cultural communities.
