Most cases of adult common cold are due to viral infection that does not need any specific treatment such as antibiotics. However, we sometimes face difficult cases that show prolonged symptoms or differing signs from first visit, despite having been treated with symptomatic treatment for common colds. We have to pay special attention with patients who are pregnant and breast-feeding mothers showing the symptoms of the common cold, because they show different physical characteristics from normal subjects. We need to understand the different diagnoses of severe diseases in pregnancy, and which points to be careful when prescribing the medication for pregnant or breast-feeding mothers.
