Antibiotic action, accumulation and resistance in beta-lactamase-producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae

N.gonorrhoeae strains which had newly-acquired TEM-type 8-lactamaseproducing ability were characterized for plasmid content and antimicrobial susceptibility. Enzyme production was found to be encoded by two species of nonconjugative plasmids of 3.2 and 4.4 Mdalton. Antibiotic susceptibility profiles of gonococcal strains harbouring the 3.2 Mdalton R-plasmid revealed the dissemination of a single clone.
