The main subject of my diploma considers: 'What do the staff of the Vorarlberg Family Service understand by independence for the mentally handicapped and how important this is to every person in their care?' To illustrate this, extensive interviews have been carried out, not just with staff, but also with the clients of Vorarlberg's Family Service. The material of these interviews has been subjected to qualitative analysis. In addition to the interviews, the author has made suggestions on how the staff of Vorarlberg Family Service can offer further support. Also there is a detailed examination of the circumstances in which the support can be given to achieve maximum independence and improved lifestyle, and where the limitations are. Interview results have been evaluated and are a material part of this analysis, 'Leisure-time and independence of the mentally handicapped' and how both are inter-related.
