Shoot morphology and growth characteristics Qf two morphologically similar submerged plants , Ranu 〃 culus nipPonicus var . submersus and R . nipPonicus var . ok α ア amensis , were compar − ed to cLarify their morpholog 豆 cal and ecological differences , Under both 且eld and experimentally equalized conditions , these two plants were clearly distinguishable from each other on the basis of leaf and peduncle size by separating the reproductive and vegetative shoots , and also by leaf color during

Both plants showed continuous shoot growth in the field , and seasonal change was higher fbr R . nipponicus var . oka ア amensiS than fbr R . nip ρ onicus var . submersus , possibly because of 且uctuations of water temperature jn the 且eld . While the fiowering of R . nipponicus var , sub 〃 lersus occurred all year round with a peak during June and 亅uly , that of R . 吻 ponicus var . o んαアamensiS was seen only during May and November . As to the eHfect of temperature on shoot growth, both plants showed thermophobio trajts , and no significant difference . The elongation rate of R . nipponicus var . o んα ア amensis was higher than that of R . nipponicus var . submersus in both ofthe water sampled from the Hongu River and the Utsunliya Rive , which are the natural habitats of R . nipponicus var . submersus and R , nipponicus var . okayamensis , respect { vely . The present results provide support fbr the suggestion that these two P 】 ants may be v 艮 rieties rather than ecotypes .
