Bile duct epithelia are the target of a number of "cholangiopathies" characterized by disordered bile ductular proliferation. Although mechanisms for bile ductular proliferation are unknown, recent evidence suggests that extracellular nucleotides regulate cell proliferation via activation of P2Y receptors.
