One of the salient features of the smart grid is the wide spread use of distributed energy resources (DERs) like small wind turbines, photovoltaic (PV) panels, energy storage (batteries, flywheels, etc), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and controllable end-use loads.
