The production of essential oil in Chrysanthemum balsamita L. reveals a seasonal dependence. – We conclude that, in blossoms, a dominant influence due to the ontogenetic development of head flowers regulates the production of essential oil. – Freshly harvested head blossoms produced 5 times the amount of oil when compared to fully developed head flowers. Dried leaves contain 5 to 7 times the amount of oil compared to fresh leaves. The composition of the oil from leaves changes more distinctly

During spring and fall, the percentage of sesquiterpenoid hydrocarbons is increased mainly in the oil from leaves. The component β-cubeben can no longer be detected in dried leaves.
