The aim of this article is to reach a more consistant acquaintance with Emmanuel Levinas's thought and the perspective of his challenge. Attention is focussed on ethics as the basis of authentic understanding. The originality of Levinas' introspection is achieved mainly by analysing "Truth and Justice" from Totality and Infinity. ... ally considering ethical relations. At the centre of this article is the theme ofJustice. Levinas argues that the Truth is founded on Justice. Therefore Ethics is the basis for Understanding. Moreover, this paradoxically new attitude, that ethics is the first philosophythat is, true and real metaphysicsdoes not leave us on a horizontal perception of ethics and of humanity. Our irrevocable responsibility in regard to the Other and the ethical desire of Infinity clearly transmit to us vertical, transcendental resources.
