Measures for Activation of Communicative-Centered English Teaching Under the Criterion-referenced Evaluation

Along with introducing the absolute rating system in CSAT English, this study attempts to explore methods to facilitate communication-oriented lessons in English classrooms. To specify the purpose, we have surveyed 4537 school English teachers about the current teaching and learning conditions under the norm-referenced evaluation system and the future direction of English teaching and learning along with the absolute rating system to be newly implemented. more » ... the enforcement of absolute rating system calls for a shift in the paradigm of English teaching, learning and evaluation. As proposed in Sung (2013), the direction of English teaching and writing should involve the shift from 'teacher-centered' to 'learner-centered' and from 'textbookand board-based' to 'using ICT: computer, internet, and mobile network'. The direction of evaluation must change from 'collective and standardized evaluation' to 'individualized and diversified evaluation', from 'product-based performance assessment' to 'process-based assessment'.
