Effect of Treadmill Training on Cardiac Size, Heart Rate and Muscle Mass in Healthy Dogs

The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in heart rate, cardiac size and muscle mass in healthy dogs during an aerobic training program. Dogs (n=9) had 10-min treadmill sessions twice a week for 12 weeks. Data were analyzed as repeated measures (SAS 9.0). Vertebral heart score (P<0.05) and left and right thigh circumferences (P<0.01) increased progressively, suggesting an adaptive response of dogs to aerobic treadmill training.
