Qualitative and quantitative aspects of food-consumption of badgers Meles meles in Swiss Midlands. -The quality and quantity of 138 stomach-contents of the badger are analyzed. 85 stomachs contained more than 20 ml strained and squeezed food items. In winter (Dec.-Febr.) the percentage of empty stomachs is highest. The average stomach filling increases quarterly from spring to autumn. The most important components were earthworms (25%), cherries (18%), corn (15%), wasps (13%) and prunes (11%).
more » ... he absolute earthworm-volume remains strikingly constant throughout the year. Cherries, corn, wasps and prunes are eaten in large quantities when present. Changes in energy input during the year are discussed.
