Stability criteria and the maximum growth rate in magnetohydrodynamics [report]

Variational methods, originally developed for deriving stability criteria from energy principles, are well suited for obtaining bounds for the maximum growth rate in arbitrary equilibria. An upper bound is derived which corresponds to a sufficient stability criterion, and a lower bound is derived which corresponds to a necessary criterion. Each of these bounds equals the actual maximum growth rate in special cases. iii THIS PAGE WAS INTENTIONALLY . LEFT BLANK
