Abstract -The stability of grain boundaries during the uptake of solute into polycrystalline MgO has been investigated by exposing sintered, well-annealed MgO specimens to NiO at various temperatures for different times, and observing their microstructure both before and after this exposure. Electron and optical microscopy techniques have been used to characterize the specimen surface morphology, and the variation in composition and elastic and plastic strains in the interface regions. The spatial distribution of nickel at various depths below the original specimen surface was determined using electron microprobe analysis. The observations are discussed in terms of the coherency strain theory.
