Des défauts natifs dans le ZnTe ont été observés en MET et MEB (mode cathodoluminescence) :joints de grains, sous-joints de grains, macles. Une implantation bore de 100 keV suivie de recuits sous vapeur de zinc produit des défauts qui ont été identifiés comme des boucles de Frank de nature interstitielle.
