3-Nitro-1,2,4-reiazole and 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazole-5-one were shown to engage in an alkylation reaction with a tertiary terpene alcohol, linalool, to furnish the corresponding reaction products. The reaction in concentrated sulfuric acid came amid isomerization and structural transformations of linalool to deliver alcohols of both primary and tertiary nature, with the latter being involved in the target alkylation reaction.
