An exactly solvable model has been proposed for the artificial molecules composed of two electrons confined in double coupled and single isolated quantum dots. This model allows us to study systematically the spontaneous symmetry breaking, which results from the electron-electron correlation in the artificial molecules. By comparing the exact and Hartree-Fock results we have shown that-in the barrier-separated coupled quantum dots-the correlation increases with the increasing barrier thickness,

In the single quantum dot, the correlation increases with the increasing dot size, which leads to a formation of a Wigner molecule. We have found a remarkable similarity of the electron density distribution in both the types of the artificial molecules.
