Marmaduke , in Maud − Evelyn ( 1900 ) , builds his whole life out of materials g . uppl ied by an imaginative piecemeal recreation of a personal past in which he in fact never lived . Mr . and Mrs . DetTick are elderly peoplc whose daughtcr died at fourteen years of age . When they meet Marmaduke , they think that he would have been a perfect husband for their dead daughter Maud ・ Evelyn .
