CESM Workshop 6/17/2015 the globe. This eliminates issues that arise from the use of traditional latitude-longitude grids such as the convergence of meridians in polar regions which requires either extremely short time steps or polar filtering to satisfy numerical stability constraints. The accuracy of the model can be controlled by selecting the polynomial degree of the basis functions on each quadrilateral element. The default polynomial degree in CAM-SE is selected to be three (cubicdoi:10.1002/2014ms000352 fatcat:unjwjorclrg2ho546sts46lf74
