Pancasila and the Recontextualization of Indonesia's State Identity: International Relations Approach

Indonesia is a country with the largest Muslim population in the world. At the same time, it is also a very diverse country with abundant resources geopolitically. One of the most famous characteristics of Indonesia is Its multiculturalism, with its national motto "Unity in Diversity". Several scholars argued that Pancasila, as Indonesia's national ideology, plays part in assuring pluralism and multiculturalism in Indonesia. However, certain "groups" like Aceh and Papua who claimed that they have distinct histories with Indonesian nationhood find it harder to have the same shared imagination that Pancasila holds those unifying elements. Furthermore, Pancasila's position plays a big role in shaping the political behavior ideals of Indonesia, as it acts as the state identity of Indonesia. This paper focuses on analyzing the role of Pancasila as a unifying factor for Indonesia, which also shapes the identity of Indonesia and the recontextualization of Pancasila.
