ABSTRACT This paper is concerned with one central historiacal-religious example: the destruction of the great temple of Serapis in Alexandria. When christian authors wrote about this fact, they recreated what happened and this incident of vandalism has remained as paradigm of the christianization by coercion. If we want to reach a full comprehension of this violent episode, the analysis of the historical context must included not only religious reasons but also another circumstances more complex than the religious tensions between pagans and christians.
