Tech Note: Technologies for obtaining bioplastics from different raw materials

Bioplastics are materials that possess the functional properties of plastics, in terms of hardness, resistance, lightness, durability, ability to be thermal and electrical insulators, among others. They are produced, mostly, from natural and / or renewable sources and can even be biodegraded and/or composted. In this sense, the objective of this study is to identify and describe the production processes of bioplastics from different raw materials, perform a bibliometric and patented analysis of scientific articles and patents obtained in the PatentInspiration, The Lens, ScienceDirect and PubAg platforms. The results obtained left identify the technological trends are not focused on obtaining biopolymers, but on the manufacture of bioplastics from synthesized biopolymers, mainly due to the costs of raw material costs that require the production of the material. As noted, the countries that are at the forefront of registration and patent applications for the study period (2009- june 2019) are the emerging nations, China and India. This behavior is not maintained for scientific publications.
