WEITZ, DANTO AND THE DEFINITION OF ART Abstract: Morris Weitz argues that the major concern of aesthetic theory has always been to determine the nature of art and to formulate it as a definition. Realizing the lack of theoretical consensus about the intrinsic properties in the nature of art, the author claims that it is logically impossible to establish the set of properties that defines art properly, because it is an open field that is constantly being recreated. Arthur Danto is aware of Weitz's arguments about the impossibility of defining art, however, he assumes the risks of the task.
