We present a novel method, using Bluetooth low energy beacons and a smartphone application, to examine frequency and duration of adolescents and parents time spent together in daily life by objectively tracking proximity in 77 Dutch families (77 adolescents (Mage = 15.9) and 145 parents (Mage = 48.9) for 14 consecutive days. Quality of parent-adolescent interactions was assessed using proximity triggered questionnaires. Overall, adolescents and mothers were more often in proximity and spent

Interactions and parenting behavior were generally rated as pleasant, but large differences between families were found in frequency and duration. This innovative method seems a promising tool to generate a deeper understanding of social interactions in daily life.
