In the scope of control program development for manufacturing systems, information handling and information reuse are currently undeveloped areas. For example, the same control function is usually implemented several times in different stages in the development process, without much reuse of information from earlier stages in the process. To improve this situation, the sub-processes that generate information have to work together in a better way. This requires efficient information handling and

This paper addresses these two issues, and presents some of the problems to be solved for enabling automatic generation, verification and optimization of control programs. The areas covered by this paper are automatic generation and optimization of the control programs of a cell, modeling and simulation of cells and manufacturing systems, the representation and exchange of information between the different tools in the development process of a manufacturing system and the use of standardized software components.
