Metabolism of l-Phenylalanine in Saccharomyces acidifaciens

It was found that l-phenyllactic acid, 2-hydroxy-3-phenylpropenoic acid, phenylacetic acid and j3-phenethyl alcohol were formed in the cultured Mayer medium containing l-phenylalanine by Saccharomyces acidifaciens. l-Phenylalanine degraded to l-phenyllactic acid, 2-hydroxy-3-phenylpropenoic acid and phenylacetic acid in this order. On the other hand, (3-phenethyl alcohol was formed from l-phenylalanine and (3-phenethylamine. From these results, a metabolic pathway of l-phenylalanine in Saccharomyces acidifaciens was proposed.
