The prolonged administration of antithyroid compounds provides an experimental means by which the activity of endogenous pituitary thyro tropic hormone may be studied. The mechanism of action of these agents supposedly involves the in hibition of thyroid hormone formation, thus re moving the controlling activity of the thyroid hormone upon the thyrotropic hormone of the anterior hypophysis (1, 92,13, 14, 927, 34, 35) .
