The ARIEL Project for the Prevention of HIV Transmission from Mother to Infant was established to evaluate virologic and immunologic parameters during vertical transmission. To determine the strength and breadth of the cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) response and its correlation with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission, a cross-sectional study was done of 31 HIV-infected pregnant women, of whom 15 transmitted and 16 did not transmit HIV to their infants.
