In Search of a View of Teacher Professionalism and Tteacher's Roles for Understanding by Design

The purpose of this research is to clarify a view of teacher professionalism on which UbD is premised and to explore teacher's roles in it. The features of UbD described here is that it targets on long-lasting understanding of students with backward design, and then promotes consistency among these goals, instruction, and assessment. Its argument is that UbD needs to be premised on the concept of teacher who mediate between curriculum development and implementation based on his own practical knowledge. In turn, it recommends five teachers roles for UbD in two respects. Those are making curriculum, analysing the results of teaching, and learning consistently from teaching in terms of curriculum, facilitating learning process, and coaching students for performance task in terms of instruction.
