A wealth of literature has emerged over the last number of decades highlighting the negative short and long term effects of bed rest on patients. Despite this however, we do not have data on how much patients walk while confined to a hospital ward. We measured activity levels of patients on an acute stroke and care of the elderly unit using pedometers. Additionally, we explored staff and patients' opinions on mobilisation during hospitalisation, in particular what they perceived as barriers to mobilisation.
