As oxygen therapeutics move from testing to clinical application a number of issues remain unresolved. As substitutes for red cells in certain critical situations, these agents have a lifesaving potential. Thus, the impacts of volume infused and repeat dosing with respect to immune and metabolic function need to be explored.
