The 1986 Membership of CASAE was surveyed to ascertain the extent and nature of adult education research in Canada. Analysis of data suggests that two variables, whether or not the member is affiliated with a university and whether or not they are expected to publish, account for much of the difference regarding the extent and nature of research. The major findings are that only 10% of university affiliates perceived research as their primary job, only 4% of the respondents spend more than 40%
