The present article is concernd with thc place of origin of those peoplc who, in search of ncw lands in which to settle and better prospects for thc future, took advantage of excellent conditions offered by the king of Castille and carne to Orihuela, where the lands were to be distributed. A.study is made of toponymic surnames, which clearly reveal the place of origin, and of first ñames which also give and idea, though less precise, of the likely provenance. Even so, it is possible to distinguish an abundance of Catalan-Aragonese compared with the number of settlers from the Crown of Castille, and a large remainder of people whosc geographical identity is hard to determine i fwe take the land register as our solé source of information. 11
