Clinical investigation on surgical treatment of severe hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (lateral type) have been carried out in 10 patients. Preoperative state of consciousness was stupor or semicoma. Four patients (40%) died within 19 days after operation. Three of these four patients were semicomatous preoperatively. One (14%) of seven patients who were stuporous preoperatively also died. In stuporous group (7 patients), there was a close correlation between postoperative results and
