Abstract The boom of investment relations under bilateral and multilateral investment treaties came with an increasing number of disputes between investor and host state related to actions and omissions of state in respect of protection of investors and their investments. These instruments played an important part in and improved the access of investors to dispute resolution mechanisms and in particular to arbitration for the protection of their investments. In this legal framework of treaties and agreements which offer promotion and protection for investors and their investment, the Energy Charter Treaty stands out as a unique multilateral treaty aimed to protect and promote investments in the energy field. The innovation in the ECT reflects on the provisions for the differences arise under the Treaty between an investor and a host state, for any reason regarding the investment. The Treaty also provides a separate legal framework for the disputes arise between contracting states. Τhe ECT provides also different methods, such as negotiation and compromise before admission to international arbitration bodies, and lack of funding required to refer the dispute to the civil authorities of the host country. The propose of this Thesis is to provide an overview of the investment relations between an investor and a state in general and also particularly under the Energy Charter Treaty. The first part provides an overview of the investment arbitration under bilateral and multilateral investment treaties. The second part of the Thesis introduces the history and legal framework of the ECT and the treaty's dispute settlement mechanism for differences between investor and a contracting state.
