Interlacing molecular threads on transition metals

Copper(1) is ideally adapted to a three-dimensional template effect allowing interlacing of 1,lO-phenanthroline based molecular threads. By using appropriate cyclization procedures, interlocked macrocyclic ligands, the catenands, were prepared via the intermediate synthesis of their corresponding copper(1) complexes, the catenates. Systems containing two and three interlocked rings were made. Catenands display very special coordinating properties, allowing in particular to strongly stabilize low formal oxidation states (for
