Soft substrates enhance droplet nucleation during water vapor condensation because their deformability inherently reduces the energetic threshold for heterogeneous nucleation relative to rigid substrates. However, this enhancement is counteracted later in the condensation cycle, when substrate viscoelastic dissipation inhibits condensate droplet shedding.
